The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta, Sept. 26

Guess who's birthday we're celebrating this Saturday night, Sept. 26th?

That's right, none other than Serena "I'm-gonna-shove-this-ball-down-your-fucking-throat" Williams! We're going to toast to Serena on her day. Why? Because she is completely out of control, out of line, she makes a lot of racket, and we can totally identify with that. We're raising cups of tea (rather than cans of Coors) because she's a NAUGHTY lil' teabagger!

Without further ado, we have a tremendous line-up of extremely funny and interesting comedians (to say the least), show producers, radio personalities, and regulars/favorites on the show, so let's get to showcasing our fine friends.

Jay Hewlett has issues. He does everything right and yet stuff happens to him. He figures it must be a conspiracy. Like the time he didn’t pay his phone bill. He got letters like, “Perhaps you forgot." Or, “Maybe it slipped your mind.” He wrote back: "Nope, no freakin’ money. They cancelled my credit cards. How do you expect me to pay my phone bill?” See, stuff happens to him. “And I don’t get it,” says Jay. “I work hard to achieve so little.” Born to a postal worker father and a high school drama teacher mother, Jay has always dreamed of working in the postal / acting profession. Now he is one jacket closer to that dream. You may laugh, and many do, but he has learned to be satisfied with making people laugh. After all, he’s a comedian. And how they laugh. His comedy / acting career is on a rocket. He was the winner of the Hermosa Beach Comedy Shootout, a recent finalist in the Northern California Comedy Competition and chosen a Best Bet entertainer by the Orange County Register. Jay performs regularly in Los Angeles at the Comedy Store, The Improv, and the Ice House. He plays clubs and colleges across the country, and you’ve seen him on Comedy Central’s Make Me Laugh, The Showtime Comedy Club Network, Saved by the Bell, Hang Time, Krippendorf’s Tribe (Touchstone Pictures), the independent short “A Slice Of Life” and as the recurring character Phil the Photographer on California Dreams. Jay is also a series regular as Jay the Postman on the syndicated comedy Food Rules.

Sandra Risser went to charm school to learn to say fantastic instead of bullshit. All that follows is fantastic rhetoric. She's young at heart (senile) and no prude (single in the 60s and 70s). She brings to comedy the vibrancy of youth and the wisdom of the ages (she's older than God). She gives an unorthodox and irreverant look at growing up in the Midwest (fantastic), the free spirit of the 60s and 70s (she's lucky to remember them) and being over 50 in our youth-oriented culture (respect your elders). Age is just a state of mind and wrinkles are only skin deep.

Anthony "Sly" Ramirez is a radio personality and comedian. He hosts The Sly Show, which is a 5-hour talk show that airs daily on theslyshow.com. Sly grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, he's a high school dropout who was dropped on his head 12 times, and has often been described as a junkie and a genetic-prone alcoholic. Sly has been compared to Kanye West because of his egotistical personality, and according to Sly, the only reason he's been called egotistical is because he’s perfect and that’s the way it is! Sly is also a practicing Christian who plans on settling down with a nice Christian lady soon.

Awet Teame was born in Eritrea, East Africa. She left the country when she was three and moved to Italy with her mother, where she lived for about two years. Awet then moved to Boston, MA where she was raised. Upon graduating from Emerson College with a degree in Visual and Media Arts/TV, she completed four internships at Carsey Werner, The Bold and the Beautiful, Fine Line Features, and Humble Journey (Erik La Salle's Film Production Co.). Next she moved onto work at New Line Cinema but got fired over some interoffice BULLSHIT! Awet then decided to do stand-up at the Laugh Factory immediately after. Since then, she's worked as a casting assistant on Animal Kidding and Flavor of Love and landed a job as an Associate Producer in a film called RevoLOUtion. After working production for many years, she decided stand-up is what she does best. Awet has performed on many famous stages in LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Boston, DC, Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, and recently Las Vegas.

A Canadian ex-pat who has called the U.S. “home” for the last seven years, Sheila Bryson has represented her motherland’s reputation for funny since before she could remember. Now, she’s trying to score free drinks for it.A finalist in San Francisco Comedy College’s Battle of the Bay 2009, Bryson brings a shamelessly personal, mostly intelligent, and frequently blush-worthy point of view to the stage. Drawing from her Canadian background and an uncanny ability to see the absurd in the every day, she invites audiences into her world with open (sometimes much too open) arms.

San Francisco performance artist Sia Amma has a great deal in common with many men on the planet. She’s circumcised. While the topic of female genital mutilation isn’t the kind of thing you’d normally find tossed into a comedy routine, the Liberian-born performer was struck with an epiphany on a local open-mike stage nearly 10 years ago: What if laughter could be the catalyst for universal healing? Onstage, she humorously remarked about the one thing that was taken away from her at the age of 9, which she “desperately” wanted to find: her clitoris. She got laughs. People were moved. Deciding that she would do whatever she could to put an end to female genital mutilation (FGM), she gave birth to a one-woman show, “In Search of My Clitoris,” and launched the nonprofit Global Women Intact. She sent the money she raised to African clinics and children in need of scholarships. “In the culture I came from, there are so many myths about women,” the performer says. “Sex is taboo and so is sexuality for women. To think that a woman can actually enjoy sex more than a man is hard for the culture to take.” Sia Amma perform locally in a funky, living room-size theater she founded on Ellis Street. The name of her room is Our Little Theater, and it's a comedy showcase featuring local comedians.

And finally, we are pleased to welcome back two regulars and favorites of the JMP, Tony Sparks and Kaseem Bentley! Kaseem is the Bay Area's number one insult comic and Tony Sparks, known to all in the SF area as the Father of SF Comedy, is one of the nicest and funniest comedians you can meet. He's also one of the best comedy hosts you could be entertained by. Wonderfully supportive to comics of all levels (newbies to veterans), he helps make stage time available to anyone who wants it. Tony Sparks is a class act when it comes to professionalism, supporting the comedy community, and bringing non-stop laughs and fun to us all. He hosts a hugely popular open mic in the SF bay area, the famed Brain Wash CafĂ© in San Francisco. This is where NO ONE gets turned down for stage time. Tony enlists the entire audience, every week, to welcome every new comedian with “A Lot of Love!!!” What? "A LOT OF LOVE!!!!!!" Tony Sparks can also be found performing comedy and hosting shows all over the place, and he produces, promotes, and/or hosts several shows including Speech Therapy Comedy at Il Pirata, All-Star Comedy and More at The SF Playhouse, Street Legal Comedy at Pissed Off Pete's, and Raw Comedy Night at Poleng Lounge.

Save your money this Saturday night. Stay home. Put your sweat pants on. Grab a cold beer or a hot or iced tea (in honor of Serena). Recline to a semi-horizontal or fully horizontal position. Then tune in!

The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta, Sept. 19

Did you know that The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta will be airing LIVE from the green room at the San Francisco Punchline on Comedy Day, Sept. 20th from 8 PM - 10 PM? That's right, silly little darlin's...this is an exciting and historical event for us and we hope to see most of you at the Punchline on Sept. 20th, the evening of Comedy Day 2009 to have fun with us!

San Francisco's comedy community comes together each year to produce a five-hour show called Comedy Day. The Punch Line, Cobb's Comedy Club, SF Sketchfest, Pepperbelly's, Rooster T. Feathers and Comedy Day all contribute their favorite comedians to produce a five-hour set that entertains thousands in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco's comedy community ALSO comes together each week to listen to a four-hour show that entertains MILLIONS in the Tenderloin called the John Miller Program with Susan Maletta! That's right we entertain millions. Millions of fried brain cells in tens of people.

Josh Sneed is quickly making his mark as one of the top young comics in the business. After quitting a comfy day job working for Procter & Gamble, he’s made excellent strides in following his passion for making people laugh. He’s opened for such acts as Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook, and Lewis Black. Most recently, Josh finished 2nd out of 100 of Comedy Central’s top comedians in the Annual Stand-up Showdown, earning him a deal to record a new album on Comedy Central Records. In 2006, Josh filmed a 30-minute special, “Comedy Central Presents: Josh Sneed” that debuted in March 2007 and is currently re-airing. In November of 2006, Josh placed 6th in the Sierra Mist/MySpace Stand-up or Sit Down Challenge out of over 2,000 entrants. Finishing high in competitions is nothing new to Josh. In 4th grade he earned a blue ribbon for throwing a softball through a tire. In 2004, he performed at the Just For Laugh's Montreal Comedy Festival in the "New Faces of Comedy" group, one of the highest honors that a comedian at his level can achieve. Josh has also be seen performing in large venue theaters across the country as an opening act for the various members of "The Blue Collar Comedy Tour", and has made several appearances on "The Bob & Tom Show".

Grace White, a.k.a. “That Old Hippie Chick” launched her comedy career at the onset of her "Middle Ages," and has gone on to open for such musical acts as 3 Doors Down, Starship, Edgar Winter, Leon Russell, and Jethro Tull, as well as comedians Kevin Pollack, Jack Mayberry, Rocky LaPorte, and Father Guido Sarducci. Her television credits include appearances on "Good Morning America" and the "Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon," she made her film debut in "The Independent," starring Jerry Stiller and Janeane Garofalo, and she's made thousands of fans laugh in Golden Gate Park from the stage of San Francisco's long-running annual "Comedy Day" celebration. White’s all female comedy tour, Women Who Kick Comedy Butt, has toured nationally and is now making plans to take over the planet. That Old Hippie Chick may not be the last of her tribe, but she is surely one of the most entertaining.

As of April 26th, 2009, Cameron Edmondson is 28 years old. He's had a series of careers and jobs that have left him unfulfilled, uninspired, and unemployed. He's from San Luis Obispo, he loves comedy, he has five brothers, his family is incredibly jacked up, and he currently resides in San Francisco.

Butch Escobar hosts a kick-ass monthly showcase at the San Jose Improv on the 4th Wednesday of every month called “Butch Escobar’s Unfiltered Underground.” Butch also has hosted and featured in Big Al’s Big Ass Comedy Show, another great show you can catch at the Improv. You can see Butch perform at other great venues around the South Bay and it’s a guarantee that any of the shows he’s involved in is going to be a great time. Butch is great—he tells it like it is and does not censor himself by any means. And, it’s a well known fact, we’re all about not censoring yourself on the JMP. We can’t wait to talk about anything and everything with him!

Phil Johnson isn’t angry. Even when he’s screaming at the audience in the guise of a schizo killing his girlfriend or a jilted lover insulting every bit of his ex-lover’s femininity, it’s done with a warmth and a knowing glance that it’s all in good fun. It communicates to the audience that no matter what problems they’re going through, there’s always someone even more screwed up than them. Phil Johnson is, in fact, a raging optimist. And better yet, it’s all set to music. Phil Johnson deftly wields his guitar, spinning out one funny scenario after another. Far beyond the strumming/storytelling and parody style of other comedians his songs are all original, and written to include the music as an integral part of the story. His shows have been called “choreographed frenzy” and his easy, mellow command of the stage turns completely demented on a dime. It’s a show with variety, energy, and originality that definitely pushes the boundaries. With years of experience leading his band Roadside Attraction, a college degree in music, and his activities in film and TV, Phil Johnson knows well what it takes to entertain an audience. But beyond just entertainment, Phil seeks to actually communicate something important… That life is just not as serious as we all think.

Now get ready for a long weekend of Comedy with John and Susan. We are your resident stalkers for the weekend.

The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta, Sept. 12

Hello Fans of Naughty Late-Night Chit-Chat...

This Saturday night is September 12th, a day of historical significance. On September 12, 1922, in what would become a major change in the marriage ceremony, the House of Bishops of the United States Protestant Episcopal Church voted 36 - 27 to delete the word "obey" from the marriage service. Aw fuck yeah!! Go Bishops!!! We 'aint obeyin' SHIT fellas! Go United States! Go WASPs! Now...if we could just figure out how to let our gays and lesbians have a marriage service, we'll be in business.

Then on Sept. 12, 1954, the hit television show "Lassie" made its debut. Remember that lovable little darlin'? (I don't either, I am too young.) Finally, we celebrate the birthday of the late, great Barry White. Thank you for bringing the romance back into our bedrooms! Even if we aren't getting laid.

First up on the JMP...
Steve Caminiti is coming in to make us giggle! Steve was voted Funniest Man in Cincinnati by his peers, Funniest Person in Ohio by Showtime Cable Network, and picked as Best Comedian in Cincinnati by both Cincinnati Magazine and City Beat Magazine. Steve is also a regular visitor on nationally syndicated talk shows, such as Bob & Tom and The Gary Burbank Show, and he was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Comedy Issue. His television appearances include Comedy Central, CBS television’s "48 Hours", Showtime Cable Network, The Nashville Network, A&E, and MTV.

Kelly Anneken was raised by a pack of feral television sets on the banks of Cincinnati's Mill Creek in the mid-80s, and was later left to fend for herself throughout 12 years of Catholic school with only network television to sustain her. After a brief flirtation with piety (which ended with her introduction to basic cable), she found herself adrift in adulthood, with absolutely no marketable skills to coast on until shuffling off this mortal coil. At this critical juncture, Kelly met and married a wealthy, surprisingly attractive computer nerd named Tom.

Using her intoxicating combination of airtight logic and sexuality, Kelly convinced Tom to leave behind his stable life in Ohio so that she could move to San Francisco and chase her dreams. Her dreams being, primarily, access to medical marijuana, re-electing Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger, and referring to herself in the third person. Eventually Tom humbly suggested that Kelly find new, more profitable dreams. So, after failing at every other possible form of employment, this industrious Jill-of-no-trades has opted to either make her own fortune by humorously chronicling the decline of Western culture or die trying. Confidentially, our money is on the latter.

Born and raised in Harlem New York, Jamarr John Johnson is an energetic, optimistic metrosexual with an eye on improving heterosexual relations! Not classically trained in the school of Bill Cosby and Jamie Foxx, Jamarr marvels at their abilities and hopes to smack the world by surprise. He also enjoys the obscure sometimes mundane observations of everyday life and indulges in the opportunity to share deep truths of his personal life. A determined performer, Jamarr performs and writes in front of a mirror every day to hone his skills. He desires to make people laugh while healing their souls. He is extremely committed to being entertaining and insightful as he hopes to be considered as one of the most authentic comedians around today!

Jamarr has performed with comedians such as Steve White, Christopher “Kid” Reid, Rene Hicks, Todd Paul and Rocky LaPorte to name drop a few. You can find Jamarr Hosting his own show on Cannery Row at Blue Fin Billiards in Monterey, California and has a recent appearances at the Improv in San Jose, The Crow’s Nest in Santa Cruz and The Broadway Comedy Club in New York City. The bottom line is, “Jamarr John Johnson will be a force to be reckoned with very soon” -- Christopher “Kid” Reid.

Cara Tramontano's comedy career started in the first grade as a loudmouthed New York Italian suddenly dropped onto a dusty playground in Tucson, Arizona. Now a creature of downtown San Francisco, her hobbies include tour guiding, coffee, and surviving the 30-Stockton. Cara's comedic inspirations include Bill Cosby, Maria Bamford, BART, and tourists. She produces Monday Happy Hour Comedy at Cafe Royale and performs all over the bay area thanks to ZipCar. Cara will embark on a national comedy tour as soon as ZipPlane launches.

As a child, Jason Downs would sneak away in the middle of the night to watch The Tonight Show. Jason's dreams would come true after graduating San Francisco State University with $30,000 of debt and no job skills. Beginning his comedy career in San Francisco, Jason has become among the best comics in the bay area. Like his influences, Eddie Murphy and Sam Kinison, Jason draws his material from his personal life. While on stage, Jason shares his dramatic and outrageous stories with the audience. A unique likeability allows Jason to confess his greatest flaws in an original, aggressive, and hilarious act. A good heart and a bad mouth allows Jason to share his story of a know-it-all who knows nothing.

Jabari Davis is coming on the show! I recently watched Jabari host the Roast of Tony Sparks, and I was absolutely blown away by how naturally funny he is as a comedian, roast master, and improviser. Also he is just a genuinely nice guy and fun person to hang out with. (And a lot of comedians are dicks, so that is saying something!) Jabari Davis is a hilarious LA-native comedian who performs at all the hottest shows in the area including Raw Comedy Night at Poleng Lounge, Speech Therapy at Il Pirata, King Pin Comedy, and Live at Deluxe at Club Deluxe. "This young comic is taking San Francisco by storm - a talent not to be overlooked." -- Tony Sparks, Father of SF Comedy.

Daryus Monday is funny on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If I wore you out by listing all the days of the week to express how funny he is, you will really be worn out from all the laughter you will have after listening to him on our show. Daryus is doing big things right now and we will hear all about them this Saturday night!

Now put your hands behind your back and assume the position. You're being arrested, detained, and sentenced to four hours of non-stop laughter.

Tune in!

The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta, Sept. 5

Before the hot action of this blog starts, let me just announce again that The John Miller Program will be airing LIVE from the green room at the San Francisco Punchline on Comedy Day from 8 PM - 10 PM! This is an exciting event for us and we hope to see many of you at the Punchline on Sept. 20th, the evening of Comedy Day 2009! Now...

Do you remember...On the 5th night of September?...Love was changing the minds of pretenders...While chasing the clouds away...Our hearts were ringing...In the key that our souls were singing...As we danced in the night...Remember... How the stars stole the night away...Ba dee ya - Say do you remember...Ba dee ya - Dancing in September...Ba dee ya - Never was a cloudy day..........

Ahhh Hello September.

The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta welcomes you. We love this month because get a big time spike in our online downloads, morning drive listeners, and late night wackin' off'ers. You see, all the college kids are back in school, they're bored out of their hungover minds, they're totally broke, they're trying to hit the books, and the radio is usually on in the background. And guess what. They are LAUGHING THEIR LITTLE BUTTS OFF while listening to The John Miller Program with Susan Maletta!

This week on the JMP!! Another stellar and long-winded blog! And another stellar and huge-humored cast of talented comedians. Most of these comedians are also comedy show producers in the area and are joining us in the studio for some quality time, emotional bonding, and of course partying heartily in honor of this concept of completely uncensored radio programming. And because it's always late on a Saturday night. And because we're a bunch of fuckin' alcoholics!

This week, in addition to our regular loose format of shooting the shit with our fellow comedian friends, we will be spending a short time discussing the business side of comedy from these folks who really know their shit! Find out what gets you booked, what prevents you from being booked, and how to set up and run your own open mic or showcase in your area so that you can get the most stage time possible.

According to Brian Malow, when he was ten years old, he asked his mother, “Why is the sky blue?" And I’ll never forget her answer: ‘Because I said so!" Not entirely satisfied with that reply, Brian decided to delve deeper. Turning to Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke – best-known as science-fiction writers - Brian soon found they both wrote non-fiction as well, and he quickly discovered that the actual science was even more exciting than the fiction! “They were great explainers – with so much personality,” says Brian. “They made it easy to understand and enjoy science." Did I mention that Brian Malow is a hilarious and gifted comedian who performs all over the bay area at venues such as the SF Punchline? He is.

Tina Allen is a California native with one foot stuck in New Jersey. Tina’s comedy covers a wide array of topics from dating, family, kids, skiing, being a teacher, growing up Catholic in today’s world, to getting older. She has been entertaining audiences throughout the bay area with her quick wit and cynicism. You can relate to her experiences, but don’t be fooled, she looks like she has a soft side but it’s not easily found. Growing up in an Italian/Irish/Catholic family that migrated to California from New Jersey allowed Tina to develop a strong personality while acquiring a ton of comedic material. She recently opened for Roseanne Barr, Sheryl Underwood and has worked with many other comics.

Kurt Weitzmann has been performing comedy for over 15 years and his act has been seen on Comedy Central, MTV, and on the stages of every San Francisco comedy club ever to come or go. Kurt Weitzmann created, edited, and produced the ingenious "SF Weakly", a highly celebrated parody of the SF Weekly, for which he was labeled a comic genius by non other than The SF Weekly. Kurt Weitzmanns comedy sketch album TALENTED is now available on AMERICAN DREAMS RECORDS. Kurt is also the producer of the new hit film "Last Call" and co-creator of the very popular and funny "Jesus Roast" and "Hitler Roast". Kurt is also a regular performer at the SF Punchline.

From the very moment this long-haired, middle aged, self proclaimed Rasta Jew Howard Stone enters the stage, hooting and hollering, you know you're in for a special treat. As a single dad with a gruff exterior but a heart of pure gold, Stone spouts alternative family values with edge and irony. He proudly extols the importance of ether as a viable tool for child rearing while launching effortlessly into tirades about pop culture, commercialism and the absurdities of life. Howard has featured in the “Jesus Roast” and “Hitler Roast”, and “The Uncle Howard Show” and performs all over the bay area.

Jason Myung Roger's sense of humor is rooted in his unique childhood. Although he was born in Seoul, Korea, at the age of five months, Jason was adopted by hippie parents and raised in, New Boston, New Hampshire. As the only Korean growing up, he developed a distinctive perspective on life which he conveys through comedy. His stories, characters, and antics all stem from his unusual upbringing. Through his company, Standup Guy Productions, Jason produces comedy and concert events. Currently, he has a monthly comedy show at the San Jose Improv called The Comedy Crashers and is producing a concert September 11, 2009 with NE-Yo and Day 26. He has performed in some of the country's premier comedy clubs ranging from NYC's Gotham, LA's The Comedy Store, Boston's The Comedy Studio, San Francisco's The Clubhouse and Cobbs, and The Improv.

Comedian Sqweeks Morales is a great room runner in the South Bay area. She runs SEVERAL hugely popular shows including Comedy Empire, Ladies Night Comedy Show at So. First Billiards, the Look-Out Bar and Grill, and Slanted Comedy, which is at the prestigious San Jose Improv. I will be asking her questions about showbiz, namely, how comedians can go about starting and producing their own comedy shows and/or comedy troupes.

Simone Campbell
has been keeping people laughing with her rapid-fire wit and in-your-face approach. Legendary lesbian comic, Karen Ripley describes her as "exciting, energetic, full of life. She warms the audience up to each other. Not an easy thing to do. Killer smile."

Now put on your disco rollerskates, put on that Sony Walkman II, and tune in!
