The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla--Merry Christmas!

This week, the John Miller Program with Candy Churilla takes a break for Christmas vacation. From 8pm to 12am, we’ll replay two of our favorite shows.

The JMP recently co-hosted the First Annual Very Puppy Christmas with Rocket Dog Rescue. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, SEVEN dogs found loving homes. Local vendors such as Tinkerbell’s Closet and Pet Express donated goods and services. Dirty Dave and the Deviants rocked the house and we chatted with some of our favorite local comics, Ben Feldman, Michael Meehan, Lillibeth Helson, Howard Stone, and Amir Malekpour.

Rocket Dog Rescue still needs help. If you or someone you know may be interested in adopting a dog, please visit http://www.rocketdogrescue.org/ If adoption is not an option, consider fostering, volunteering, or donating cash to this great cause.

Ben Feldman (of Ben Feldman’s Ben Feldman’s Laugh Orgy) captured some highlights/lowlights of the day’s festivities. Check it out on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n65EgV3KZZk

Happy Holidays from John and Candy!!!

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla December 16

First up, we have a favorite of the JMP, Kira Soltanovich. Born in the former Soviet Union, and raised by immigrant parents in San Francisco, Kira Soltanovich has plenty to laugh about. "Like most kids, my parents took me to Disneyland …not for the rides, for the lines. They assumed there’d be food at the end of them." Kira was a series regular for four seasons on Girl Behaving Badly, and has also appeared on such shows as Jimmy Kimmel Live, 3rd Rock From The Sun, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

In the second hour, we’ll chat with Nick Leonard and Dana Cory.

For the past seven years, Nick Leonard has produced the premiere gay comedy showcase in San Francisco, QComedy. Nick has performed with Louie Anderson, Brian Regan, Eric McCormack, Marga Gomez, and many others. Nick has performed improv with Too Many Larrys, Bay Area Theatersports Sunday Players, Dojo Fabuloso, the Karen Ripley Players, and others, plus sketch comedy with The Macaroni Art Theatre.

Dana Cory’s comedy career began in the late 90’s with an appearance on The Alex Bennett Radio show. After Dana amused Alex, the producers, and Emmy-winning writer, actor, comedian, and soon-to-be friend and mentor Rick Overton, she returned for more shows and a comedy career was born. Dana has also performed with improv comedy troupes SNAFU, Dojo Fabuloso, and The Fibbs.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla December 9

Our first guest is Tissa Hami, who will appear at the SF Punchline Monday, December 10th as part of the Coexist Comedy Tour. Tissa Hami is one of the world's few female Muslim stand-up comics. Her unique act and fresh perspective on life as an Iranian-American woman leave audiences in shock and awe. From Islamic fundamentalists to white liberals to good old-fashioned racists, no one is safe from her sharp wit. Tissa hopes her comedy will help break down stereotypes about Muslim women and foster understanding between Iranians and Americans.

In the second hour, we’ll talk with Deb Campo and Ali Mafi.

Deb Campo is an SFCC Clubhouse favorite and has recently appeared in Five Funny Females at the Purple Onion.

Ali Mafi is the world’s only funny gay, fat, Muslim. The other gay fat Muslims are soooooo unfunny. Check out his vblog site http://gaymuslimcomic.blogspot.com/, where he covers it all from celebs, to television, to pop culture.

Tune in to 87.9 FM in San Francisco and Los Angeles, 104.5 in Berlin, Germany. Or listen at http://www.fccfree.com/. We're on the air live every Sunday night at 10pm-12am following an replay from 8pm-10pm.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla December 2

Playfully self-delusional, wildly entertaining, and possessing a booming voice dripping with insincerity, James P. Connolly, our first guest, has been described by industry professionals as a cross between a "young Steve Martin and Stephen Colbert."

Host of “Live from Here with James P. Connolly” on XM Channel 154 National Lampoon Comedy Radio, James has been a finalist in every major comedy competition and festival entered, including Comedy Central’s “Laugh Riots,” the Boston Comedy Festival and the San Francisco International Comedy Competition. You may have seen him on Comedy Central, HBO, host of VH1’s “Movie Obsessions,” a Grand Comedy Champion on Ed McMahon’s “Next Big Star,” SiTV, UPN, numerous National Commercials, voice over, multimedia, as well as weekly airplay on XM and Sirius Satellite Radio Comedy Channels.

Our next guest Ken Koskella took a 35-year break from the performing arts to become a very successful business executive. After retirement, he began performing stand up comedy. Ken won the Diego Comedy Competition and the Avalon Comedy Comedy Competition. He was featured on the TV show “Stand-up It's Thursday Night." KRON TV San Francisco. He was also host/mc/producer of The Sixteen Mile House Comedy Showcase. Additionally Ken is producer/performer in the "bundled" comedy show, The Suburban Comedy Tour. (Four comics with different styles from four different generations of the "suburban experience.") Ken has been called, "A tanned, dapper Rodney Dangerfield" by the Oakland Tribune.

Ross Turner performs across the United States and has shared the stage with Dana Carvey, Sue Murphy, Bobby Slayton, Robert Schimmel, and Last Comic Standing's John Heffron and Dat Phan, and many more. When his agent can’t pull in the favors required to get him club gigs, Ross tears it up at corporate events of Fortune 500 companies like Comcast, Cisco Systems, and 7-Eleven. He also produced the successful “Comedy Workout” and “4 Over Forty” comedy tours.

Trying to classify Ross’s style is an exercise in futility. Always clean and original, Ross uncovers the hidden humor in such diverse subjects as people who talk to their pets, open marriage and vegetarianism, which make him a favorite of vegan polygamist dog groomers everywhere. The press has variously described Ross as “a nimble wit…biting and quirky,” “Woody Allen-esque,” and “appearing Friday and Saturday.”

Our first guest, Joe Klocek has become one of San Francisco's most unique comics. With his razor sharp wit he uses to work the crowd, Joe is in high demand at clubs and corporate functions. Raised in the Midwest, but now a confirmed San Francisco resident, Joe brings a refreshing look at life through the eyes of a class clown who read too much.

Joe is the creator and host of the S.F. Punchline’s, Get It!? A Stand-up Comedy Game Show, which everyone in the Bay Area should attend on December 5th, since Candy is in the lineup.

In the second hour, we’ll talk with Kaseem Bentley and Tony Sparks. Kaseem is the Bay Area’s number one insult comic and Tony Sparks is lovingly known as the father of SF comedy, as he is responsible for much of this comedy madness in San Francisco and in Oakland. Tony hosts the Speech Therapy comedy showcase at Il Pirata on the first Friday of the month. He also hosts Comedy & More at the SF Playhouse Sundays and the Thursday open mike at the Brain Wash.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla November 18

Our first guest, Kevin Avery, has since taken the Bay Area comedy scene by storm. His acting background and wildly physical style of stand-up has made him a favorite in comedy clubs and colleges all over the country, bringing him to the semi-finals of the 1998 San Francisco Comedy Competition, and making him one of Metropolitan Magazines “Top 99 People to Watch.” Kevin can be seen regularly at the Punchline, Cobb’s Comedy Club, The Improv, and Rooster T. Feather’s Comedy Club, as well as other popular venues in the area. Kevin is one half of Live 105.3’s Siskel & Negro.

In the second hour, we'll talk with Greg Edwards, an actor and comedian who recently played the lead in Primitive Screwheads’ stage production of Night of the Living Dead. He is part of the San Francisco sketch group Tossing Alice and can be seen in December with Paul Mooney at the Sacramento Punchline.

Also stopping by is Dan Wilson, whose comedy is a no-holds-barred look at everything from politics and pop culture, to relationships and his own family life. Dan makes his home in the East bay, and is a regular performer at some of the biggest clubs around Northern California, including Rooster T. Feather's, The San Jose Improv, Pepper Belly's, and the Purple Onion.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla November 11

Our first guest this week, Brian Malow, performs a unique brand of science comedy. Not only has he appeared on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, but also the Discovery Channel, A&E, and TechTV. In addition to opening for the likes of Ron White, Sam Kinison, and Dennis Miller, he photographs insects! One of his pictures provided the first documentation of the existence of a North American fly species.

Malow co-produced and co-starred in Mitch Hedberg’s Los Enchiladas (Sundance Film Festival, 1999) and hosted several Hedberg tribute shows. He is currently a contributing editor for a science humor magazine, the Journal of Irreproducible Results.

Also joining us this week is Ben Feldman, a favorite of the JMP, who is hated by most comics because he’s not only incredibly wealthy, but has been voted (by himself and Candy) as the Bay Area’s funniest comic. Ben created the monthly comedy show Ben Feldman’s Laugh Orgy, which happens the second Wednesday of every month at San Francisco’s Grant & Green Saloon.

In the second hour, we'll talk with Howard Stone and Kurt Weitzmann about their upcoming Jesus Roast, in which Candy plays Mary Magdalene.

From the very moment this long-haired, middle aged, Rasta Jew Howard Stone enters the stage, hooting and hollering, you know you're in for a special treat. As a single dad with a gruff exterior but a heart of pure gold, Stone spouts alternative family values with edge and irony. He proudly extols the importance of ether as a viable tool for child rearing while launching effortlessly into tirades about pop culture, commercialism and the absurdities of life. Howard has appeared in countless movies and television shows throughout the 80's and 90's and is the host of his own talk show in the Bay Area.

The entity known as Kurt Weitzmann began performing stand up at the infamous Holy City Zoo where such personalities as Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, and Margaret Cho honed their craft. Since then he’s appeared on Comedy Central, MTV, and on the stages of every San Francisco comedy club ever to come or go. Kurt created, edited, and produced the ingenious SF Weakly, a highly celebrated parody of the SF Weekly, for which he was labeled a comic genius by non other than The SF Weekly. He wrote, produced, and performed comedy shows at The HBO Workspace and the Comedy Central Stage and created sketches and comedy shows at The Fake Gallery. Kurt worked with such comedy luminaries as Dave Thomas, Patton Oswalt, and Eddie Pepitone, to name a few.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla November 4

In the first hour, we'll talk with Grace White, aka That Old Hippie Chick, a long-time friend of the JMP. She’s a classic bohemian with a mother who stalks her, a father to whom road rage is an art-form, and an act like no other. White has opened for such musical acts as 3 Doors Down, Starship, and Jethro Tull, as well as comedians Kevin Pollack, Rocky LaPorte, and Father Guido Sarducci. She’s made thousands of fans laugh in Golden Gate Park from the stage of San Francisco's long-running annual "Comedy Day" celebration. White’s all female comedy tour, Women Who Kick Comedy Butt, is a comedy show with a revolving lineup featuring bright women of all ages, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. You can find Candy on Grace's show as well as our next guest, Beth Schumann.

Beth Schumann’s hilarious observations and anecdotes are at once intelligent and silly. She speaks to many of the issues baby-boomers face today: high stress jobs, divorce, weight gain, health problems, and medications. Beth is a founding member of the Mixed Nuts: Comics on Meds stand up comedy troupe, which performs at popular venues throughout Northern California. The show features comedians on medication for a wide variety of mental health disorders, raising awareness and laughter at the same time. Beth has shared the stage with Rob Cantrell, Will Durst, Bobby Slayton, Harland Williams, and more.

Bob Johnston is a high-energy comic who grew up in a small town, and has been called “the only Redneck in the Bay Area.” Bob does a great job morphing blue-collar comedy with the high tech world and skips easily from topics such as baldness to ex-girlfriends to traffic problems. Getting his start in the East Bay/Oakland area helped Bob earned the title of “the blackest non-black comic.” Bob has opened for The Stylistics, Richard Lewis, Bruce Bruce, Tony Rock, Mary Ellen Hooper, Lavelle Crawford, and Sherman Helmsley (aka George Jefferson). Bob has performed at The Improv, the Punchline, the Comedy Store, and many more.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla October 21

In the first hour, we’ll talk with an old friend of the JMP, comedian Andy Slye. Andy’s a favorite in the Phoenix, AR scene, known for his drug-laced metaphors and comedy about civilian and military life. He’s headlined the Heavy Hitters of Comedy at the Hollywood Improv, appeared on Americas Funniest People, and most recently toured Airforce bases with Corey Holcomb. Andy has worked with Dave Attell, Nick Swardson, Jim Breuer, DL Hugley and many more.

In the second hour, we have Bay Area comics Phil Johnson and Kevin Munroe.

Phil Johnson is a raging optimist. Even when he’s screaming at the audience in the guise of a schizo killing his girlfriend or a jilted lover insulting every bit of his ex-lover’s femininity, it’s done with warmth and a knowing glance that it’s all in good fun. Phil deftly wields his guitar, spinning out one funny scenario after another. Most recently, he’s appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the San Jose Improv. He is one half the Battle of the Romantically Dysfunctional Songwriters.

Kevin Munroe is a favorite in the SF comedy scene and produced the long running “Ebony & Irony” show at the SF Comedy Club. He’s most recently appeared at “Full Contact Comedy” at 12 Galaxies, Mary Van Note’s “Comedy, Darling,” and the Punchline. He has an accent and won’t tell you where’s he from.

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla, Sunday October 21

Our first guests are Sandy Danto and Phil Haney, hosts of National Lampoon’s web series Fat Guy Nation. While they gleefully eat themselves to death they take on both America’s problem with bullshit diet marketing as well as overeating using the visual aides of Penthouse pets. Phil Haney is the editor of humor web site http://www.superawesomewow.com/. Sandy Danto regularly performs at the Comedy Store.

Yayne Abeba returns to the JMP for her second appearance. She has been touted as one of San Francisco's up and coming comedians and has performed with David Allen Grier, Dan Lewis, Kathleen Madigan, Rob Cantrell, Johnny Steele, Brian Copeland, Arj Barker, Jim Short, Tony Camin, Will Durst, and Al Madrigal, just to name a few.

Ronn Vigh’s brash attitude and acerbic wit earned him comparisons to a young Joan Rivers (SF Weekly)--well, if Joan were male, gay, and didn’t shoot Botox by the pound. He was featured on NBC's Last Comic Standing recently hosted Palm Springs Pride, headlined the Lake Tahoe Gay & Lesbian WinterFest, 10th Annual Michigan ComedyFest …the list goes on and on and on, much like when Ronn speaks.

Dave Nickerson returns for the second week in a row. Dave has performed all over the US, as well as Japan, Korea, and exotic Canada! He has worked with some of today’s best comics, including Doug Stanhope, Harland Williams, Dave Attel, and Kevin Pollack. He still likes cheese.

We will also talk with Kira Soltanovich, series regular on Oxygen’s Girls Behaving Badly. Born in the former Soviet Union, and raised by immigrant parents in San Francisco, Kira has plenty to laugh about. "Like most kids, my parents took me to Disneyland …not for the rides, for the lines. They assumed there’d be food at the end of them." And whether it's stand-up comedy, sketch, hidden camera or improv, Kira keeps nightclub and television audiences laughing. She has also appeared on such shows as Jimmy Kimmel Live, 3rd Rock From The Sun, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Sam Shaw of Crisis Hopkins Improv has performed, directed, and produced improvisational theater in the Bay Area since 1998. Co-founder of the San Francisco Improv Co-operative, The Monday Night Improv Jam, and the San Francisco Improv Festival, Sam has also performed locally in scripted productions with Killing My Lobster, Unidentified, Cassandra’s Call, and the Exit Theater. He is proud to have produced the Japanese improv quartet Yellow Man Group, “discovered” and managed The Babcocks, and toured the country with the troupe-in-a-van The Wild Rumpus. Sam made his network television debut on Late Night with Conan O’Brien this year.

Justin Lamb is a Bay Area comic and member of sketch/improv troupe SPF7. They dream of one day having a space station. When he’s not performing, he writes the blog Let's Make A List First.

Our first guest, Dave Nickerson has performed all over the US, as well as Japan, Korea, and exotic Canada! He has worked with some of today’s best comics, including Doug Stanhope, Harland Williams, Dave Attel, and Kevin Pollack. He likes cheese.

In the second hour, we’ll talk with Bay Area comics Lisa Myers and Grant Lyon (both finalists in Rooster T. Feathers comedy competition, 2006).

Growing up, Lisa Myers stood out as the oddball in a sea of flannel shirts and John Deere caps in her small, mildewing, Oregon town. Rather than wallow in the quagmire of family-friendly, government-sanctioned safe comedy, Lisa's quick wit stretches the audience to the limits of taboo and perception. Having tackled venues from Seattle to Hollywood, Lisa is now sharing her act with most places in-between, including Rooster T. Feather's in Sunnyvale and the San Jose Improv.

Oscillating between moments of hyperactivity and a laid-back surfer attitude, Grant Lyon reveals his sixth grade personality on the stage. He discovered stand-up while playing collegiate soccer at UC Santa Cruz, and unfortunately for his soccer coach, the passion of his life changed. Grant has entertained at many venues in the Bay Area, including the San Francisco Punchline, Pepperbelly’s, and Rooster T. Feathers.

The unfairly handsome, wealthy, insured Ben Feldman (Ben Feldman’s Laugh Orgy) fills in for me this week while I’m out gallivanting.

Our first guest is Will Franken. Franken’s humor is rooted in the British sketch comedy tradition. Onstage, he portrays an eclectic mix of characters through a series of interconnected vignettes. His skits are often satirical, skewering a range of subcultures and political views.

In 2005 the SF Weekly selected Franken Best Comedian; the San Francisco Bay Guardian calls him the Best Alternative to Psychedelic Drugs; and Tribe.net named him one of the Top 25 People to Watch nationwide.

In the second hour, John and Ben will chat with Bay Area comics Drennon Davis (the Peeper & Giney Show)and Arthur Gaus.

Our first guest is Bryan Kellen, whose feverish mix of storytelling, observational humor, and physical comedy produces one of the most universally captivating shows in entertainment today. He has become the regular theater tour opener for George Lopez, who noticed Bryan’s reliable abilities and similar style of turning uncomfortable life experiences into hilarious performances.

The National Comedy Hall of Fame named Bryan as “America’s Best Up-and-Coming Comedian.” He has since reappeared at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival, as well as on NBC and Comedy Central while becoming a favorite headliner at America’s top comedy clubs.

Our first guest is Eric Schwartz, aka Smooth-E. He's the guy in your office with a secret life as a superstar.

It’s hard to hide such a rare talent, as Schwartz‘s popularity is quickly rising. “Circulating the net faster than the Paris Hilton video” (Jerusalem Post), Smooth-E personifies the fresh-blended creation he is named for. Mixing comedy, music, and viral Internet videos, millions of fans worldwide have begun to "surrender to the blender." Eric has quickly become the most-watched comedian on Myspace.com with over a million views each month.

Defying the boundaries of traditional stand-up, his multimedia appeal has the power to make national headlines. When a story happens in Hollywood, Smooth-E has gained the reputation of delivering hilarious songs and videos seen on by CNN, Fox, "The Tonight Show," E! and more.

Eric's spectacular, character-and-music-driven live show has gained him appearances on "Comics Unleashed," (NBC) “White Boyz in the Hood” (Showtime), BET's "Comic View," “Midnight Money Madness” (TBS), “Trapped in TV Guide (TV Guide Channel), "Latino Laugh Festival" (SiTV), and "Loco Comedy Jam" (Mun2). His voice is heard as DJ on the Wayans Brothers’ new animated show, ”Thugaboo,” and each week as the narrator of the MGM-distributed series, "Animal Atlas."

Next we'll talk with Larry Thomas, best known for his Emmy-nominated role as the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. Thomas has appeared in a number of films, TV shows, and commercials, and appears at autograph-signing shows across the country. He has appeared in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Scrubs, Arrested Development as a Saddam Hussein lookalike. In 2006, Thomas began selling autographed photographs of himself through catalogs such as Wall Street Creations Inc., glaring at the camera in chef's garb, with the handwritten notation "No soup for you!"

The John Miller Program with Candy Churilla 7/22/07

This week's show's (7/22/07) guests:

Our first guest, Adult Actress/Model Dana Hayes helped John and Phil Perrier with two radio game show demos, Porn Star Sports Trivia and The Money Shot, for Larry Flynt (the genius behind Hustler) when he considered setting up Hustler Radio.

Dana has starred in 95 XXX movies since her first act of debauchery in 2003. Dana, aka the Pleasurist 's "goal is to make a man feel like a king!" Her web activity, nude modeling, energy, exuberance, and do-anything attitude would be impressive in a woman half her age.

And speaking of women half Dana Hayes' age...our next guest, comedienne, musician, and all-around talented hottie Jennifer Justice hosts The Jennifer Justice Show, where you'll find our co-host Candy Churilla both on their Myspace videos and live at 50 Mason in San Francisco on the last Thursday of every month. Joining us in the studio, (as well at the next JJ Show on July 26th) is edgy, hilarious sexy comedienne and author Mary Van Note.

John also plans to chat with Shane, aka "Shark," one of his first jocks he brought on while station manager and program director of the newest radio station in a major market. John and Shark have an unbreakable bond, which formed over their love of radio (second only to their love of sex). Shane has stared at movies the last year, but see what he's up to now.
